Granada is the capital of the province that shares its name, located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in the Betic System, the highest mountain range in the Iberian Peninsula. Situated in eastern Andalusia, in southern Spain, Granada boasts one of the richest cultural heritages in the country. In addition to the globally renowned Alhambra and the Albaicín neighborhood, both designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Granada is home to a Renaissance cathedral whose construction began in the 16th century.
Granada’s history has left numerous traces in the form of palaces, churches, and other buildings that showcase the city’s incredibly rich cultural heritage. The monumental complex of the Alhambra and the Generalife includes a fortress, a medina, and the palace of the Nasrid kings. Within this complex is also the Renaissance palace built by Emperor Charles V alongside the Arab stronghold.
Opposite the Alhambra, on another hill, lies the Albaicín neighborhood, a narrow and fascinating labyrinth of streets where the white houses, featuring interior gardens, are known as “Cármenes.” Here, you can find the Mirador de San Nicolás, offering a breathtaking view of the Nasrid palace. Nearby is the Sacromonte, famous for its inhabited caves and some of the city’s most authentic flamenco venues.
Granada is also home to the Renaissance Cathedral, considered the first of its style in Spain. Adjacent to it is the Royal Chapel, commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs as their burial site. The city is dotted with many other churches, built by the Moriscos after the Reconquista, which collectively create a unique architectural style known as Mudéjar.
Alongside this extensive historical and cultural legacy, Granada offers a wide range of tourist attractions: museums, art galleries, and theaters, all contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of this beautiful city, which buzzes with activity both day and night.
In recent years, Granada has become the university city par excellence in southern Spain, with more than 80,000 students from across the country and abroad.
